Tower of Innovation
Spaghetti, tape, string and one marshmallow: build the tallest freestanding tower that holds the marshmallow on top — a deceptively profound design sprint.

- Easy
The Tower of Innovation (the classic marshmallow challenge, upgraded) gives each team eighteen minutes, twenty sticks of spaghetti, a metre of tape, a metre of string and one marshmallow that must sit on top of a freestanding tower. The marshmallow is heavier than it looks, and towers that soared confidently collapse in the final seconds when it's placed.
The famous insight — kindergarteners outperform MBAs because they prototype early instead of planning perfectly — lands hard on corporate audiences. We run multiple rounds so teams apply the lesson immediately: round two towers are routinely twice the height of round one. Wrapped in a debrief on prototyping, assumptions and iteration, it's the highest insight-per-minute activity in the catalogue.
How the activity works
- 1Teams of 4–6 receive identical kits and the brief: tallest freestanding tower, marshmallow on top, eighteen minutes.
- 2Facilitators call out time checkpoints but give no advice.
- 3Towers are measured only if freestanding with the marshmallow in place at the buzzer.
- 4A short debrief reveals the pattern: teams that tested with the marshmallow early beat teams that planned perfectly and placed it last.
- 5Round two runs immediately — same kit, new knowledge — and heights typically double.
Team outcomes
- ✓The prototype-early lesson experienced physically, not lectured.
- ✓Teams see their own planning-versus-testing bias exposed in the data.
- ✓Round-two improvement proves the value of fast iteration within one hour.
- ✓Scales from a boardroom of 8 to a conference hall of 200.
Facilitator notes
- ✓Never warn teams about the marshmallow's weight — the collapse is the curriculum.
- ✓Measure heights publicly and chart round one versus round two.
- ✓For senior audiences, share the kindergarten-versus-MBA research after round one, not before.
Variations
- ✓Cost-Constrained Round — materials carry prices; score is height per rupee.
- ✓Silent Build — no talking in round one, unlocking a communication debrief.
- ✓Mega Tower — teams merge kits in round three to build one giant tower together.
Tower of Innovation — FAQs
Is this too well-known to run?
Fewer than one in ten Indian corporate participants has actually done it — and the two-round format lands even for veterans, because knowing the lesson and applying it are different things.
How much space and budget does it need?
Almost none — a table per team and grocery-store materials. It's the highest-value low-logistics module we run.
What roles does it suit?
Anyone, but it's especially sharp for product, engineering and strategy teams whose real work involves exactly this planning-versus-prototyping tension.
